July 18, 2024 – This week marks a significant moment in history as former President Barack Obama announced the renaming of the plaza at the Obama Presidential Center to honor the late Congressman John Lewis. This announcement came on the fourth anniversary of Lewis’s passing, highlighting the enduring impact of his legacy as a civil rights icon.

John Lewis, known for his unwavering commitment to justice and equality, left an indelible mark on this country. His call to “get in good trouble” continues to inspire generations. Former President Obama shared his admiration and respect for Lewis, stating, “John Lewis loved this country so much that he dedicated his life to making it better. Michelle and I are proud to honor John’s legacy at the Obama Presidential Center, where the John Lewis Plaza will provide a space for visitors to gather for years to come.”

The plaza’s renaming has been years in the making. In 2021, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos made a remarkable $100 million donation in honor of John Lewis. Bezos requested the plaza be named after Lewis, emphasizing the importance of honoring such a pivotal figure in American history. The John Lewis Plaza is expected to attract nearly a million visitors annually, serving as a place of reflection and inspiration.

“Freedom fighters deserve a special place in the pantheon of heroes, and I can’t think of a more fitting person to honor with this gift than John Lewis, a great American leader and a man of extraordinary decency and courage,” Bezos said in a press release. He expressed his support for President and Mrs. Obama and their Foundation’s mission to inspire future leaders.

Obama’s personal connection to Lewis is profound. Reflecting on their relationship, he said, “I first met John when I was in law school and told him then that he was one of my heroes. Years later, when I was elected a U.S. Senator, I made sure he knew that I stood on his shoulders. When I was elected President, I hugged John on the inauguration stand before I was sworn in, reminding him that I was only there because of the sacrifices he made. And over the years, he remained a source of wisdom and encouragement to me, Michelle, and our family.”

The dedication of the John Lewis Plaza at the Obama Presidential Center is a small yet meaningful way to honor the remarkable legacy of a gentle and courageous man who did as much as anyone to bring this country closer to its founding ideals.

The Obama Presidential Center, including the John Lewis Plaza, is set to open in spring 2026. This tribute ensures that John Lewis’s legacy will continue to inspire and educate future generations about the importance of fighting for justice and equality.
