The gospel music world is grieving the loss of Bishop Kervy Brown, a revered voice in the industry, who passed away on Sunday, July 7, at the age of 65.
Bishop Kervy Brown, celebrated for his powerful vocals, was the lead singer for Hezekiah Walker & the Love Fellowship Crusade Choir (LFCC). Known for his soulful renditions, Brown’s sudden death has left a void in the hearts of gospel music lovers. While his family has not yet released an official cause of death, reports suggest he succumbed to a massive heart attack.
Brown’s career was marked by unforgettable performances on songs like “The Lord Will Make a Way Somehow” and “Make It to That City,” leaving an indelible mark on gospel music.
Hezekiah Walker, a longtime friend and collaborator, expressed his sorrow in a heartfelt statement:
“Today, I, along with the clergy, religious communities, and the faithful of the Covenant Keepers International Alliance, offer our prayers to the family, friends, and membership of The Greater Deliverance Tabernacle, and gospel music lovers around the world on the death of my beloved friend and brother, Bishop Kervy Brown. Many in our Fellowship will remember that Bishop Brown has walked with me for over 40 years doing the Lord’s work in the United States and around the world.
May all who mourn his passing find comfort in the Lord and solace for his long service and devotion to the Church of Jesus Christ. Please join me as we pray for the repose of the soul of Bishop Brown; may he rest in peace.”
Born and raised in the Bronx, New York, Brown was often called a “Singer’s Singer.” His mother, Mary Brown, was a lead singer with The Faith Gospel Singers and his first musical mentor. Brown began singing at just five years old, performing alongside his mother, which laid the foundation for his future in music and ministry.
In the early 1980s, Brown started his career with The Bronx Mass Choir, performing with gospel legends like James Cleveland and Rev. Charles Hicks. His career took a significant turn in 1985 when he became a founding member and lead singer for Hezekiah Walker & The Love Fellowship Choir. Over the next three decades, his distinctive tenor graced many beloved tracks, including “Great Day” (Focus on Glory), “Any Way You Bless Me” (Live in Toronto), and the Grammy-winning “Lord Do It” (Love is Live).
“Lord Do It” remains one of the most cherished songs in gospel music, with fans of all ages recounting the profound impact it had on their lives. This song, in particular, showcased Brown’s extraordinary talent and solidified his place in gospel music history.
Bishop Kervy Brown’s contributions extended beyond music. Thanks to an introduction by Bishop Albert Jamison, he was actively involved with the Gospel Music Workshop of America for over 40 years. His participation in this esteemed platform earned him widespread recognition and respect within the gospel community.
In addition to his music career, Brown was a devoted preacher. He began sharing the gospel at 13 and, in September 2009, was called to serve as the pastor of Greater Deliverance Temple in Danville, VA. In 2018, under the leadership of Bishop Hezekiah Walker, he was ordained as a Bishop, serving the Pentecostal Churches of Jesus Christ organization and overseeing churches in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.
Bishop Kervy Brown’s influence will forever be felt among gospel music fans. His dedication to his faith, his powerful voice, and his unwavering commitment to his ministry have left an indelible mark on all who knew him and were touched by his music.
Our hearts and prayers go out to Bishop Kervy Brown’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. His legacy will continue to inspire and uplift generations to come.
