Berklee College of Music held its second annual Gospel Performance Program at its Boston, Massachusetts campus. The program took place from Monday, July 24 to Friday, July 28. This immersive five-day experience, started by the colleges Africana Studies Division in 2022, was designed for high school students aged 15 and above, who possessed at least six months of playing or vocal experience.

A notable highlight of this year’s program was the participation of visiting artist VaShawn Mitchell. Mitchell, a seven-time Stellar Award-winning singer and songwriter, led a master class and also joined the students in a final concert on Thursday, July 27.

Throughout the program, participants engaged in ensemble rehearsals, performance-focused technique classes, and discussions about the history of gospel music. Additionally, there was a presentation on the gospel music industry that covered both performance and business strategies. This encompassed exploring the cultural significance of the genre and its ties to contemporary music trends.

VaShawn Mitchell, originally from Chicago, Illinois, a city renowned as the birthplace of Gospel music, has a deep connection to this art form that has significantly impacted his life. He dedicated his youth to serving as a Music Director and later as a Minister of Music in Chicago, fueled by his profound love for Gospel music. Over time, Mitchell’s artistic vision matured, shaping him into a seasoned worship leader and a respected Gospel songwriter.

Beyond his personal recording career, Mitchell’s creative talents have extended to nurturing the careers of prominent artists in recent years. He has been recognized with two Dove Awards from the Gospel Music Association for his work as a producer. Maintaining his commitment to uplifting emerging voices in the Gospel Music industry, VaShawn assumed the role of President & CEO of the Gospel Heritage Foundation in 2018. He envisions expanding the reach of this ministry to prepare the next generation for their own musical journeys.
