ATLANTA, GA – As we near the end of Black History Month, the Porter Sanford III Performing Arts Center is gearing up for a powerful and poignant production that promises to leave audiences both moved and enlightened. Deep Greenwood Ignited: The Hidden Truth of Black Wall Street is set to take center stage, offering a gripping portrayal of one of the darkest chapters in American history – the Tulsa Massacre.

Scheduled to run from Thursday, February 29th to Saturday, March 2nd, with daily showings at 3 pm and 7 pm, this theatrical masterpiece is a fitting conclusion to a month dedicated to honoring the rich and complex history of Black heritage in the USA. Featuring acclaimed actor Jason Louder (known for his role in BMF) and showcasing the soul-stirring music of gospel legends Vickie Winans and “The Prince of Praise” Byron Cage, this production promises an unforgettable experience for all who attend.

Set against the backdrop of a nation grappling with racism and segregation, Deep Greenwood Ignited transports audiences back to a time when the Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa, Oklahoma, stood as a shining example of Black excellence and economic empowerment. Led by visionaries like O.W. Gurley and J.B. Stratford, this thriving community – affectionately dubbed “Black Wall Street” – was a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of its residents.

However, the success of “Black Wall Street” was not without its challenges. As racial tensions simmered and jealousy festered among those outside the community, Greenwood became a target of violence and destruction. The tragic events of May 31st to June 1st, 1921, saw the neighborhood ravaged by a violent mob, leaving hundreds dead, homes and businesses in ruins, and a once-thriving community shattered.

Now, a century later, playwright Mia Walter brings this harrowing tale to life, shedding light on the untold stories of those who perished and the survivors who endured. Through her meticulously researched and deeply moving script, Walter invites audiences to bear witness to the courage, resilience, and unbreakable spirit of the Greenwood community.

“In honoring the victims of the Tulsa Massacre, we also honor their legacy of strength and determination,” says Walter. “This play is a tribute to their memory and a reminder of the ongoing struggle for justice and equality.”

With its powerful performances, gripping narrative, and soul-stirring music, Deep Greenwood Ignited is poised to challenge perceptions, ignite dialogue, and inspire action. As we reflect on the legacy of “Black Wall Street” and the resilience of its people, let us also recommit ourselves to the pursuit of a more just and equitable future for all.

Tickets for Deep Greenwood Ignited are available for purchase at www.ticketstorm.com.
